The end of treatment for a brain tumor is an exciting time for families. However, it also marks the beginning of adjusting to a life you never imagined. Neurocognitive changes and the learning environment at school are just a few of the challenges that families will need to navigate.Traditional models of special education are not designed to address the unique needs of brain tumor survivors. Special education staff are typically trained to support learning disabilities, developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and/or behavioral/attention issues. Therefore, families of survivors are left needing to navigate a system that does not understand the educational or social-emotional supports necessary for survivors to find success in the classroom.
