CBTF Commitment to Research and Training

Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF) is committed to finding a cure for childhood brain tumors. During its 30-year history, CBTF has awarded over $10.5 million in grants to doctors and researchers at leading institutions throughout the United States and Canada for research into the causes of, and effective treatments for, childhood brain and spinal cord tumors. CBTF has also provided over $650,000 for professional training and clinical fellowships in the field of pediatric neuro-oncology with a goal to increase the number of experienced professionals equipped with cutting edge information and specific knowledge in the field of pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors.

This year, CBTF continues its significant funding of the Children’s Brain Tumor Tissue Consortium (CBTTC). Our philanthropic partner in this effort is Licensing International (formerly LIMA), to whom we are deeply grateful. Since 2004, Licensing International has donated over $6 million to CBTF, restricting those funds first for independent research into brain tumor cures and then for the creation and support of the CBTTC.

What started out as a hypothetical question – “What would happen if we were able to get researchers from multiple institutions to collaborate and actually work together to find a cure” – has become the largest brain tumor biorepository on earth. With an operations center located at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the CBTTC now includes 18 member institutions around the globe (including Australia, China, and Italy).

Taking it one step further, all the clinical data, as well as the results from research and analysis, are now stored “in the cloud.” Researchers from any institution around the world may access this information. To date, the CBTTC has authorized 45 scientific projects.
